Variable product colour picker

I have managed to create a colour selector on a variable product using attributes and the colour picker type, but then none of the colours appear.

If I use the text type for attributes I can set the colour using the attribute title, but cannot choose the colour.

Can you please explain how to activate the colour picker on a variable product, and then how to select the actual colour and the tooltip separately?
