How to update theme without losing any customization

Can you please show me how to properly update the theme with out losing any customization that I have made? I read about making a child theme but I am still a little confused. Do I use your child theme or do I have to make my own? If I do have to create my own child theme, how would I go about creating one? I have never done this before.
