disable hidden searchbar

The search bar behavior isn’t consistent on an ipad. The click on the magnifying glass to reveal the search box searches including the previous terms – it’s hard to keep the searchbar open to type in a new search.

I’d like to explore always having the search box displayed. What is the best way to do that?
