Customizing Child Theme

Good day,

Please, how do I customize the theme header, js and css files, so that when I update the theme, in future they are not overridden.

I have tried using Customize to change css on wordpress, but it doesn’t have any effect. I have had to change css in theme-33cccc and theme-ff0000 files. But my fear is that if there is an update, I would lose all the customizations I have done.

Is it possible to copy the files to child theme and make changes there so that updates do not affect the customizations or is there anything else I can do?
